Historic Weequahic Neighborhood Association's "Community for Youth Wellness Day & Empowerment Walk"

Updated: Nov 7

The Historic Weequahic Neighborhood Association, on Sunday, November 6th, organized a "Youth Wellness Day & Empowerment Walk", spearheaded by Sandra Hughes.

The details of the "Youth Wellness Day & Empowerment Walk", included "fun healing play for our youth (ages 5+)" to interact with nature inside Weequahic Park, and an "Empowerment Walk".

This Event was in response to the November 1st rooftop rifle shooting of two officers and neighborhood lockdown in the Historic Weequahic section of Newark's South Ward and, also on the same day, the shooting of a 6 year old and two 20 year olds, that occurred in the West Ward.

The "Empowerment Walk", organized by Dr. Krystyn Blackmon and Ronice Bruce of the South Ward Special Improvement District, started at Chancellor Av & Van Velsor Pl. for a gathering, then a walk down Bergen Street, as a commUNITY, to welcome Uncle Willie's Wings Restaurant to the neighborhood.

The Weequahic Park Association was honored to be included in this restorative event, and felt it was essential to be a part of this effort to help unite and comfort community members during this stressful period.
